What’s required by law?
Alarm systems should have the following features:
- Be photoelectric and comply with the Australian Trade Standard 3786-2014
- The device also contains an ionisation sensor and is less than 10 years old
- Smoke alarms need to be in good working order and interconnected with every other alarm in the home or property.
Any smoke alarm you install from the new year onwards should be a photoelectric-type which complies with AS 3786.
If a smoke alarm which is hardwired to the domestic power supply needs replacement, it must be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric smoke alarm.
It’s possible to have a combination of smoke alarms (240V and battery operated) in homes. Wired and/or wireless interconnectivity options are also viable.
